Fine Yanktonai Sioux Possible Bags

$12,500.00

1880s

Height 13 1/2"  Length 20 1/2"

Provenance: Private Midwest collection

This rare intact pair show all the characteristics of Sioux artisans from the late 19th century, likely the Yanktonai Sioux. Each bag is constructed from Native tanned hide and decorated in the lazy stitch technique using sinew as thread.

The term Possible Bag is said to have derived from an indigenous word with meaning similar to 'a bag for every possible thing.' These bags were created in pairs and served as storage around the inside of the tipi, or when a nomadic tribe was on the move, they were hung on either side of a saddle. Over time most got separated, making these two a very special pair.
