Exceptional Colima Musician
Circa 100 BC - 250 AD
Height 14" Width 8 1/4"
Provenance: Susan Schroeder, Los Angeles, CA. Acquired in the 1960s.
Exceptional red-orange pottery standing musician, holding a rattle in both hands, in a forward position. Wearing a wide brimmed hat secured with a chin strap, and large flared ring leg bracelets. Wearing a wide body band and loincloth having a large real panel and three flaps, all being decorated with the finest possible incised interlocking diamond textile pattern. This is the finest decorative work that we have ever seen on a Colima sculpture, truly exceptional. Depicted smiling, and in a trace-like state. Overall strong mineral deposits on the surface. Both legs reattached with restoration over the break lines. A minor chip on the brim of his hat, otherwise excellent condition. Without a doubt one of the best possible examples of Colima sculpture.
