A very finely carved masterpiece argillite trade pipe attributed to master carver John Cross (1867-1939) circa 1900.  The pipe features great imagery and is masterwork carving by one of the legendary Haida artists. 

BIRTHPLACE: Chaatl, Haida Gwaii

John Cross, Chief of Skidegate, was a carver of gold and silver jewelry as well as argillite and wood. He was well-known for his totem poles in wood and argillite, as well as being an expert tattooist. John Cross was a contemporary of Charles Edenshaw and Tom Price and was known as one of the best carvers of his generations. A highly desired artist whose work can be found in many museums and important private collections worldwide.
